Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. My partner and I regularly visit Cradle Mountain and I think it is one of the most beautiful parts of Tasmania.

Time

We arrived at Cradle Mountain late in the afternoon, and headed straight to Dove Lake just in time for sunset. This particular location is extremely popular for tourists, so there were actually quite a few other people there on this particular day.

Lighting

The late afternoon light at Cradle Mountain is often the best as it light up the peak of the mountain itself. The sun sets behind the viewer in this image and the soft light creates some lovely tones across the lake and the mountain itself.

Equipment

This image was shot using a Canon 5Ds, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L, Sirui T2204x tripo, K-40x ball head, NiSi 0.9SG and NiSi 6 stop filter.

Inspiration

This is one of my absolute favourite scenes in Tasmania and is one I revisit quite regularly. I like to see the different seasonal changes that happen with the lighting and the surrounding flora of the lake. Every season, and every single day of the year offers a different scene to photograph here and there is somthing truly special about experiencing it.

Editing

I use basic lightroom adjustments for contrast, clarity and vibrance.

In my camera bag

I use a lot of Canon equipment - Canon 5Ds, Canon 5DsR, Canon 5DMKIII. I use a variety of lenses - Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II, Canon 70-300mm f4L. I currently use a Gitzo GT3542 tripod mostly but also regularly carry a Sirui T2204x. I use a range of NiSi filters including the 0.9SG, 0.6SG, 6 stop, 10 stop and carry everything in the Lowepro BP350AW bag.

Feedback

Aim to be wherever you are shooting during the best light which is more often than not in a 1 hour window around sunrise and sunset. Be patient and prepared to visit locations many times before you capture something you are very happy with. Experiment with your compositions as quite often the idea you may have in your head originally may not be the best images you create.
