Great picture. I took the same picture but a lot of clouds in mine, was a little disapointed. Like the clouds and reflection on the mountains!

Behind The Lens

Location

Mormon barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton, National Park with Grand Teton Mountains in the background.

Time

After grabbing our sunrise shots of Mount Moran at Oxbow Bend we traveled down the road to the Mormon Barn arriving there at approx. 7:15 am. Sun was just coming up over the hills behind us . The morning was perfect for this shot as the eastern sky was clear while the western sky presenting grey to almost black clouds with a few hints of blue sky. This allowed the sun to light up the frame.

Lighting

Because of the high dynamic range of the existing light I decided to use my Lee GND filters with a polarizer. The sky and mountain were at least 3 stops higher than the barn due to the direct sunlight so I used a 0.9, 3 stop soft graduated neutral density filter to darken them. This gave the scene a more balanced lighting as well as adding a more dramatic affect on the sky. Also because of the sun rising through the clear sky portion of the eastern sky this allowed the east facing front of the barn to receive the direct morning sun.

Photo was shot with Canon 5D Mklll, using EF 24-105 mm f4L IS USM lens. Shutter speed: 1/60 at f9, ISO 100 Focal length 45 mm Photo taken on Manfroto 190 carbon fibre tripod with Manfroto ball head

Inspiration

This barn is one of the most photographed scenes in the US National Parks system. While I was visiting the picturesque sites in Grand Teton and Yellowstone I wanted to see what kind of an image I could produce in order to compare it with the many, many wonderful images of this location. This would give me some indication of my progress as an amateur photographic hobbyist.

Editing

I generally try to remove any haze from my landscape shots using Topaz Labs, Fusion Express 2, Lens Effects. UV Haze Filter. Other than reducing haze the shot was cropped to remove some of the foreground for better balance.

Canon 5D Marklll Camera body with battery grip EF 24-105 mm f4L IS USM lens. EF 17-40 1:4L Wide Angle Lens EF 70-300 4.0 L USM Lens Lee Filter system with 1,2 and 3 stop GND soft and 1,2 and 3 GND hard filters Little stopper 6 stop ND filter Lee 105 MM Polarizer

Feedback

Ensure you understand the principles of lighting when it comes to high dynamic range of light. Many times we are at locations where the variation from the lighter to the darker areas of the frame do not lend themselves to a great photo. If you lighten the darker areas the highlights get blown out or vice versa. To balance this light variance you need to ensure you are ready to use one of the 2 methods of combating this issue to level out the light. I have decided I want to work towards getting my shot right the first time in the camera and so therefore have decided to experiment using the Lee GND filter system. One can also use the HDR or Bracketing functions on most cameras and then process the multiple images producing an HDR image.
