Bruges is magical. That's the only way I know how to describe it. After a night of taking photos I settled ion to do some processing to see how they turned out and every photo was awesome. Well at least I think they are awesome. This scene is one of those places that has been photographed probably millions of times but this shot I got while huddled under a cheap umbrella during a down pour of rain turned out better than I could have ever expected. Like I said this place is magic!

Location
This photo was taken in Bruges Belgium. It really is a beautiful city with photo opportunities around every corner, day or night.Time
This photo was taken during the night in order to get the light reflecting on the water. As a bonus the town square was light up for a football game and aligned perfectly with the Belfort tower.Lighting
The lighting for this image was the key to getting the reflections in the canal. I used multiple exposures and HDR to get the most out of the scene as there was a mix of very dark areas and very bright areas.Equipment
For this image I used a Nikon D7000 with a Tokina 11-16mm Lens. The wide angle allowed me to take in the whole scene as space was limited. Another key piece of equipment was an umbrella. It was absolutely pouring down rain when I took this long exposure shot.Inspiration
I had seen pictures from Bruges before and literally just walked around town for two days snapping everything that looked interesting. This location in particular is very popular and I wanted to see if I could get something a bit different than everyone else’s.Editing
The post processing for this image was pretty minimal as the scene is beautiful straight out of the camera. The key here was getting a long exposure to make the water look silky smooth and bring out the reflections. I took multiple exposures and just dropped them into Photomatix to create a single HDR image. Next I used Photoshop to combine the HDR with the original RAW files and mellow out the HDR effect. I also used the multiple exposures to help Mask out a pesky goose that was making laps around the canal as I was shooting. In my camera bag
My bag has stayed the same for years. A Nikon D7000, and Nikon 18-300mm lens and my trusty Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for low light and wide angle stuff. I carry a Really Right Stuff ball head and a Manfroto tripod just small enough to fit in my suitcase but big enough to keep rock solid.Feedback
For this shot really the key is stable long exposure shots. I use the built in self timer to avoid camera shake. This image would look just fine without the HDR but it’s up to personal tastes. Happy shooting!
