Looking down on the Piazza Del Campo from the Torre del Mangia, Siena, Tuscany, ItalyTime
Taken at 13:45 on 17th September -though didn't really have control over the time just the nearest time to midday when the sun was at it's highest to light the piazza but dependant on when we reached the front of the queue to make the 20 people allowed up at any time.Lighting
Wanted to get up the tower when the majority of the Piazza was in sun as long shadows might have diminished the scale of the spaceEquipment
I used a Canon 5D3 with a Canon 17- 40mm @ 17mm F8 balanced on a bean bag leaning over the tower parapet!Inspiration
It's an icon view of an iconic place - just wanted to capture something slightly different that showed the scale and structure of the place.Editing
I blended a couple of exposures the bring out the detail in the shadows and to emphasise the texture of the bricks in the architecture and Piazza floor through tonal clarity adjustments using luminosity maskingIn my camera bag
I carry Canon 5D3 an 7D, Sigma -70-200 f2.8, 120-300 f2.8, 20 f1.4, 1.4 tele-converter Canon 17-40 f4, TSE 24 f3.5, 50 f1.8 Tamron 90 f2.8, 17-50 f2.8 Tokina 11-16 f2.8 Manfrotto 55XPROB 498RC2 Head HiTech filtersFeedback
If you are visiting iconic tourist destinations try to anticipate when the best times are for the lighting you envisage are or as is often the case what the lighting will be when you get the opportunity to visit- I use The Photographers Ephemeris app on my phone. Also be prepared to get around tripod/flash bans and other restrictions - beanbags (I use one filled with polystyrene balls for travelling- also makes a handy travel pillow!) and knowing how your sensors deals with high ISO helps me out here
