Location
This was taken near Spott in East Lothian ScotlandTime
Taken mid afternoon in spring (14:30 21st April)Lighting
The light was bright but not sunny - high level thin cloud cover. This provided even lighting without too much shadow/contrast, particularly important for this subject as the yellows can go off the scale in direct sunlight making it difficult to produce an image that gets beyond a mass of colourEquipment
For this image I used a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 @ 112mm/f8 1/250sec on a Canon 7D on a tripodInspiration
Some years the farmers seem to plant t majority of their fields with Oil Seed Rape and I wanted to tr and capture the sense that everywhere you looked was yellow! I needed to find a viewpoint that had some definition within and around the fieldsEditing
This image was post processed in Lightroom with sharpness, tone and clarity adjusted to bring out the detail in the non-yellow areas and even with the light, saturation needed to be reduced slightly! In my camera bag
I carry Canon 5D3 and 5DSR, Sigma -70-200 2.8, 120-300 2.8, 1.4 tele-converter Canon 17-40, TSE 24, 50 1.8,135 Tamron 90 2.8 macro Laowa 15 4 1:1macro Manfrotto 55XPROB 498RC2 Head HiTech filtersFeedback
This type of image is all about scouting and finding the locations it helps if you can identify what crop is planted before they are near their peak and visualise what the scene will look like. Depending what you are trying to achieve it then comes down to knowing what the light angles will be, when -I use the Photographers Ephemeris for this - and hoping the weather delivers what you want!
