The detailing of the feathers is exquisite. Looks like brush strokes in a painting! Congratulations on your Contest Finalist win in Animals Are Beautiful Photo Contest!

Great shot- Congratulations- how did you do this shot at 1/320 of a second? Did you use a strobe?

Location
The photo was taken in our new backyard in New Brunswick, Canada. We just moved from England and I became addicted to trying to photograph hummingbirds in flight. Something we don't get in the UKTime
This was shot on a fairly overcast morning at around 10am. I knew a fast shutter speed would mean a high ISO so I introduced a flash to the equation.Lighting
I used a Nikon sb910 flash to help me freeze the motion and also keep the ISO to a minimumEquipment
This was shot with a Nikon D810 and a Tamron 70-200 lens, also using an sb910 flash.Inspiration
Hummingbirds are so vastly different to anything I was used to in the UK and the speed is phenomenal. I was determined to freeze one in actionEditing
I cropped the photo in Lightroom. I also used an adjustment brush to clean up the background a little with noise reduction. Also lifted the shadows. Another adjustment brush was used to selectively sharpen the bird.In my camera bag
My bag is very landscape orientated. I carry a Nikon 16-35, Tamron 24-70, Tamron 90mm prime, as well as a full set of Lee filters. Standard and grad nd's. Finally the Tamron 70-200 and a carbon fibre tripod.Feedback
Study the hummingbirds flight path to the flowers or feeder. They often use the same route. I pre focus on an area I see him frequent. Also be very alert. They can be in a out very quickly. The flash is a great method to freeze the motion without using higher iso.
