This was taken while on a "Super Jeep" tour of Iceland in 2009. Icelandic horses are special, our guide explained, because they're unique to the island and have not had occasion to cross-breed.Time
This was probably mid-afternoon in late August.Lighting
The lighting for my outdoor shots on this vacation was so variable depending on the weather; it could go from bright sun to some wicked looking clouds and back in the same day. It was a bit overcast at the time, and I believe I was in the Jeep and the driver just slowed down so I could take this out the window as we passed, so didn't have a lot of time to think about setting the shot up just right. But I think it turned out pretty well :)Equipment
This was shot with my Canon Digital Rebel, free-handed.Inspiration
There was so much to see in Iceland that was beautiful and photo-worthy, I was snapping pics all day. But these horses were just gorgeous, so calm and stoic on the side of the road. I loved that they were each a different color too.Editing
I don' think so, I may have lightened it up a bit as it was overcast when I shot it, but this is pretty much the original image. In my camera bag
When traveling I have a camera bag with my Canon DSLR, the standard lens and a telephoto, plus a spare battery and extra memory card, just in case. But more and more I keep my iPhone with me too, even if it doesn't get service in the country, in case I just want to snap a quick photo without breaking out the big guns:)Feedback
As noted above, the weather in Iceland can vary a lot in the course of a day, so be prepared for anything. We were incredibly lucky this day, as the day trip we had booked had overbooked, so while everyone else was on a normal tourbus, we were the "overflow" lot and just had four of us with a driver in this "Super Jeep" with huge wheels for going off-road. He took us to a few extra spots that the rest of the tour didn't get, and it was much easier to ask "hey, can we stop for a photo?" If I had it to do over again, I'd definitely rent a car and drive the "Ring Road" around the island, so I could stop and go as I pleased and spend as much time as I wanted taking photos.
