This shot was taken at National Harbor in Oxon Mill, MD. We were there for a "screen on the green" event and I decided to snap this pic of the Capitol Wheel as it started to light up for the night. To be perfectly honest, I didn't notice the kissing couple in the bottom corner until after I'd snapped it, it was a happy coincidence I caught them!Time
It was sundown, as you can tell from the colors in the sky. I wanted to get a shot before it got completely dark.Lighting
I wanted to get a shot before it got completely dark, as I knew my iPhone's camera wouldn't be very good at that point. I really liked how it turned out--you got the colors in the sky, the lights on the ferris wheel, and everything else basically in darkness, which really added something unexpected.Equipment
I just had my iPhone with me for this, as I was out socializing and just happened to take a few pictures.Inspiration
I love the Capitol Wheel and how the "light show" they decorate it with changes almost everyday. We were so close to it down on the Harbor that I couldn't not get a few shots as long as I was there.Editing
Not really, I may have used the auto-enhance feature to spruce it up a bit, but this is pretty much what it looked like when I shot it.In my camera bag
I always have my iPhone (currently a SE, but I may have still been using a 4 when I took this) and try to upgrade it every couple years to get the newest camera features. I also have several other camera apps on the phone, like Hipstamatic, a personal favorite. When I'm going to see something I know I want to take lots of pictures of, I bring my Canon Digital Rebel, which I've had since 2011 and love. I have a pretty standard lens for it, and a telephoto for zoom shots (handy when you've bothered to climb hundreds of ancient stairs to get to the top of say, the Duomo or some other beautiful European church and want to capture the view!)Feedback
Always have a camera with you, even just the one on your phone! You never know when you'll see something you want to snap. Even before I had a smart phone, when I would travel I would bring my "good" camera for when I knew I was going to want to take lots of pics, but I also kept a simpler point and shoot camera handy in my purse all the time, in case I wanted to pull it out really quick and just snap a pic of something interesting or funny that was on my path, without having to haul out the whole camera bag. I've gotten a lot of great shots I'd otherwise have missed that way. And a poorer quality shot with a simpler camera is better than no shot at all because you missed the opportunity.
