Location
This was shot in Wapusk National Park, near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. I'd been more than happy with what i had shot so far but i have always loved this images clean composition.Time
Shot in late afternoon on an overcast day. I was trying a friends lens camera combo when this little guy passed by and i was lucky to snap a few off.Lighting
To be honest it was quite flat. At this coastal region the weather can be quite severe - usually snowing hard but on this occasion thankfully not.Equipment
Borrowed gear on this occasion - Nikon D300 and a Nikon 200-400 F4 lensInspiration
I have been working and travelling Canada's north for 11 years and have many bear images but on this occasion i was looking for an image to high key - minimal background distraction (there are lots of rocks and shrubs willows around ) and hopefully a bear that would give me more than a bum shot as they walk away to make it more interesting. Luck was on my side in many ways but this image turned out really well.Editing
Only some minor tweaking in Lightroom to give a fuller high key look. Took out a few distracting small foreground rocksIn my camera bag
Canon 5dmk2, Canon 7dmk2, Canon 70-200f2.8 mk2, Canon 17-40 f4, Canon 24-70 f4, Tamron 150-600 in good light, Sigma 15mm and Tokina 11-16 for aurora plus a couple of flash 580 ex2 and 600rt, Lee filters, Manfrotto carbon tripodFeedback
Look for clean backgrounds and a nice contrasting subject to get the high key image. I was lucky as there are normally far more distractions when shooting polar bears - its not all white out there (and my many full hard drives of bear images are the proof!) :-)
