Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a shoot in the winter on a ranch in Wyoming. A few of the wranglers were standing around waiting on instructions. As an admirer of the silversmith's craft I zoomed in on this custom bit hoping to catch the intricate details of the silver. I have a custom bit crafted by a craftsman that I treasure but this one was a work of art.

Time

A very gloomy, snowy afternoon.

Lighting

There was nothing special about the lighting. It was cloudy and threating snow. No sunlight to speak of.

Equipment

This was hand held and taken with my Nikon D7000 with my 80-400 mm lens.

Inspiration

My favorite things to photograph are horses and anything related. As a life long rider myself I appreciate many of the fine details created for horsemen by craftsmen for many of their everyday equipment needs. This bit is a prime example. A work of art that is used daily but lasting a lifetime.

Editing

Cropping, adjustments for lighting, contrast and converting to black and white.

In my camera bag

As I am a minimalist where carrying equipment is concerned I typically only carry my camera and everyday lens (currently a Nikon Z7 II with a 24-70 mm lens), an extra battery, card and lens cleansing cloth. I will add or change out equipment depending on what I am going to shoot.

Feedback

This whole shoot was about working cowboys/cowgirls in the winter. Those photos were magnificent but I zoomed in on a detail and this was the result. Always look at the big picture, details in that big picture and behind you - you never know what you might come up with!
