Location
This photo was taken in an indoor arena. We took advantage of the sidelight streaming in through the large doorway.Time
It was later morning. The sun was still at an angle where it streamed through the doorway but high enough to create those slanting rays of light.Lighting
This is a case of taking advantage of side light. The arena was deep in shadow with only sunlight streaming through the doorway. This light created contrasting shadows with the areas the light lit almost glowing.Equipment
My Nikon D7500, hand held taking advantage of the natural light.Inspiration
I always admired photos like this. Dark, moody shots taking advantage of minimal light. This was my first attempt trying this. Many of the photos I took weren't great but understand that when dealing with a live animal they don't ways have the same thing in mind that you do. Ears aren't forward, something outside the arena caught their attention, etc. but I smiled when I saw this particular one on my computer monitor. I actually got what I envisioned!Editing
Standard post processing - deepened the shadows by upping the contrast and lightened the highlighted areas. I cropped in to eliminate some of the distracting arena background. I did have to remove a bit of the rope around the horse's neck - thank goodness it was only a small amount as that type of processing is definitely not my area of expertise. I will say that I processed this in both color and B&W. The color is so soft and appealing printed but the B&W shines on the monitor. In my camera bag
Currently my go to camera is my Nikon Z7ii with a 24-70 mm lens with an extra battery. I have other lenses and a spare body but I tend to be a minimalist when shooting. Typically I only carry additional equipment if I know I am going to need it. Of course the need for the equipment I left home usually shows itself but this has also forced me to get creative with what I have on hand. Usually I make things work unless of course I need that long lens. Then my minimalism bites me in the rear, LOL.Feedback
Practice, practice, practice and patience. This can be created with any subject. A dark hallway with side light coming in through a window works or even standing beside a window with the light streaming in will create this type of result. Have fun and savor the successes!
