Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Northeast Creek Park in Jacksonville, North Carolina. It's a wooded park that's actually primarily used for frisbee golf and hiking but I love the look of the trees, especially with the light coming through.

Time

This was taken during sunset golden hour, my favorite time of day for sessions!

Lighting

This was taken with entirely natural light and that sun flare peeping through was done in camera.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Nikon D750 and my Nikkor 85 mm 1.8 lens. It's my absolute favorite combination for portrait sessions on location.

Inspiration

This family is very happy & loving with each other and I was able to let them be them during their session with me. This image in particular was one I wanted because it shows the connection and the fun they have.

Editing

Yes, they were initially a bit darker because they were backlit so I adjusted that in camera raw. I pulled the image into photoshop and did basic editing plus some artistic decisions using Greater Than Gatsby actions.

In my camera bag

In my siren satchel I have my Nikon D750, Nikkor 85 1.8, Nikkor 50 1.8, and I will also keep my Nikon SB700 and magsphere on hand in case I want to use a pop of flash.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to play with your light & your exposure! This image was intentionally slightly underexposed to keep the detail in the highlights (especially in the rim light on mom's hair!) and pulled up in ACR. Let your clients be themselves, you'll get the best photos of them that way!
