Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Time

The series was taken around 2:30 PM local time on 21 April 2019.

Lighting

I felt the result demonstrates reasonably good detail throughout the photo and retained the warmth of the well-worn wood lit by natural light.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D850 with a Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC lens - mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

When I saw that the cabin was open for inside photos, I decided to try to capture it in a manner consistent with real estate photography -- i.e., capture both the inside and outside (through a window) with correct exposure for each. There is no electricity in the cabin and the dynamic range of the shadows and sunlit areas was rather huge!

Editing

I used a series of nine photos with a Tamron zoom at 24mm. The exposures ranged from 1/20sec at f/11 to 3.0sec at f/11. I adjusted slightly in Lightroom then combined in Photomatix, straightened with DXO View, and then cropped to 4x5 format.

In my camera bag

I carry both a Nikon D850 plus a Nikon D750 that has been to Kolari to change to a 'full spectrum' camera. I generally have the Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC lens ready on my D850 and a Nikon AI 28mm f/3.5 manual focus lens on the D750. I also carry a pinhole lens that I use on both cameras.

Feedback

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is an incredibly beautiful place for a variety of photo interests; from black bear and deer to historic cabins and churches to graveyards! However, it can be very, very crowded! Parking is tight and driving is slow and approximates the flow of glaciers on occasion. BUT, the tourists are excited and very friendly!!
