Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from one of the bridges crossing the river Rhine in Basel. A long hot and dry summer meant that the water level of the river was a lot lower than normal and the tops of the water plants were the floating on the surface providing a source of food for the swans.

Time

It was taken on the 31st July 2018 at 1620h.

Lighting

All natural lighting, nothing more than early evening light.

Equipment

I used a Fujifilm GFX 50s, handheld (tightly) over the side of a bridge.

Inspiration

At the time when I took this image, I had a lot of commitments keeping me very busy and away from photography. Because of this I decided to carry my camera with me when ever I could. I walk across the bridge where I took this photo every day on my way to and from work. Over the weeks I had noticed the water level dropping and that a few swans were taking advantage of it around the same time each day. On this evening the light was great and I had time to spend extra time. I left work a earlier than normal to try to be at the location before the swans. It worked. I was very happy when the first swan arrived, the light and colour of the river was what I had wanted and worked well with the contrast of the white of the swans. The swans swam up river from underneath the bridge, so I wasn't aware of how man there would be initially. As one after the other arrived, the scene kept improving.

Editing

There were some minor changes various aspects of the image. In particular, I increased vibrance and saturation as well as exposure to bring more life into the water, due to these changes I then had to decrease the highlights and whites because of the white swans

In my camera bag

My bag varies a lot depending on the situation. On this day I had one camera and one lens, but I generally have a two lens with me, a wide and a long, as well as a tripod as a minimum.

Feedback

Be aware of your surroundings. This image was the result of noticing several environmental factors, a drop in water levels, an increase in the growth of the water plants and noticing a routine.
