Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the beach of Little Haven in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.

Time

It was taken mid-afternoon. The timing was dictated by my arrival at the beach and seeing the ocean for the first time in a year.

Lighting

It's just natural light from a beautiful mid afternoon winters sun.

Equipment

It was shot handheld with a Sony A7 mk2 (ILCE-7M2) and a Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS.

Inspiration

I love the ocean, and the feeling of awe and expanse on a wide open beach. I've spent a lot of my life near or in the ocean, but I now live in a landlocked country. In this image I wanted to capture my own feelings when I get to see the ocean again. That sense of distance and space and how time can pass you by while your gaze is captured by the hypnotically motion of the waves.

Editing

It is a composite of two layers of the same image. The person and the shadow were removed from the background in the first layer. In the second, the person and the reflection were removed, and the area filled with content copied from the surrounding area then applied a motion blur to this layer. The person and shadow were then placed back into the image.

In my camera bag

What's in my bag has varied greatly over time, cameras change, lens change, and even systems change, but there is a trend. I always have a camera, a wide lens, a long lens, filters and a stable tripod.

Feedback

This is a composite, it is only one image but it was created by creating two layers from that one image making an adjustment to one and merging them back together. With that in mind, to create something like this, you're not only looking at what is in the composition, but also what could be.
