Behind The Lens

Location

Eastbourne - summer 2017

Time

Early morning, probably before 8.00am but I can't remember for sure. I'd been hoping for some broken cloud or decent waves to create some dramatic shots or maybe long exposures around the pier, but on the day it wasn't really happening for me and it soon began to rain so I took shelter under the pier for a while which limited my choices still further. When the rain eased and I emerged I shot this as a reminder of the "British Summer" I experienced, and the rain provided me an opportunity to get some reflection. A consolation shot rather than my original goal.

Lighting

All natural light though with a grad filter to darken the upper sky.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk III, probably with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens as that tends to be my first choice when exploring. It allows me to shoot close ups and people on the fly, whereas landscapes tend to be patient enough to wait for me to change lenses.

Inspiration

it was a cold and wet morning; exactly the opposite of a summer's day when the pier should be busy with visitors. Instead it was deserted so that appealed to me, and by getting down to ground level I could make it more interesting by using the puddles.

Editing

I enhanced the yellow of the domes slightly to make them stand out (though they were what caught my eye initially) and gave the rest of the scene a dollop of cyan to emphasise the cool conditions.

In my camera bag

In addition to the above, a 24-70 f2.8 and a 17-40 f4 give me a range of focal lengths to meet most requirements. I might add a 1.4 extender on some trips. I'll always have some ND filters and polarising filters and usually a giotto carbon fibre tripod.

Feedback

Don't give up when the conditions on the day don't provide what you hoped for. It can be a great stimulus to your creativity to find something else to shoot when you've been disappointed.
