Behind The Lens

Location

The legacy of John Gwyn and James Hood Brooke can be witnessed in what today is Brooke Park. The park owes its very existence to these two philanthropic benefactors, although each had very different aims in mind when they decided to use their influence and wealth for the good of the local community. The site was originally laid out in the Victorian era as part of the establishment of a boys’ orphanage - the first to be established in the city. When John died in 1829, the bachelor had left the bulk of his wealth amounting to over £40,000 for the feeding, clothing and housing orphans from among the lower classes. The trustees of John Gwyn’s will purchased the site for the sum of £200 and on Monday, September 9th, 1839, the foundation stone of Gwyn’s Institute was laid by the Protestant bishop of the day, Richard Ponsonby. The building opened its doors to its first pupils in 1840. Although the orphanage, Gwyn’s Institute was demolished in 1986, the grounds of the orphanage survive as the lower part of the park retains much of the original path layout and the location of the pond remains. In August 1901, Brooke Park was handed over to the Londonderry Corporation and has been maintained by the local authority as a public park for the last 113 years. Famous visitors included King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1903, while King George VI visited in 1945.The Princess Royal came in 1952 and planted trees with the same silver trowel used by King Edward. Queen Elizabeth II visited the Park in 1953, soon after her accession to the throne.

Time

The photo was captured early in the morning just after sunrise. I'm lucky not to live far from the park and had been watching and waiting for the right morning to capture a cold looking park.

Lighting

As you can see the lighting was actually very poor due to the thick cloud so a slower shutter speed and tripod was required even though it was daylight.

Equipment

I'm very lucky to be shooting with the fantastic Sony A7RII. I shot this with the 24-70 F4 lens, although it might have been nice to have had a wide angle for this shot. Tripod was also used in the shot as I wanted to shoot a slightly longer exposure

Inspiration

The park had been newly refurbished and had only reopened a few weeks before this. With the flowers and trees bare from winter I wanted to try and capture the park in a colder light but need to get it with the frost and fog to help create that feeling of cold. I also liked the idea of a shot of a place normally filled with people abandoned due to the cold.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW so of course post-processing is used. I try to keep images natural but will always enhance the areas that make it more appealing to the eye. All my images start life in Lightroom, but I often use Photoshop and Nik before returning to Lightroom for final tweaks and output. I have spent many years perfecting my workflow but I am also not afraid to try new things and ideas on my images.

In my camera bag

My camera bag consists of my Sony A7RII, my 24-70 F4 Sony Lens, a Sigma 30m Art Lens. I also have a wired trigger for tripod use, my 2 main filter are my CPL filter and 10 Stopper for long exposure work. Other than that its generally cleaning cloths and batteries

Feedback

My best advice for this type of image is making the effort to get up early on a cold winter morning and go out when its much easier to stay in the heat. Try to time your shots, quite often there is a short window to capture this shot. Log fog always helps and keeps the temp down so you get the frost on the group a little longer than normal.
