Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot along the Mullaghmore peninsula in County Sligo, Ireland. It is characterised by its ocean views and has a skyline dominated by the monolithic shape of Ben Bulben mountain. In the distance you can also see Classiebawn, a country house built for Viscount Palmerston in the 19th century. Most tourists generally shoot the the view from the road you see in the left of the image but we decided to climb a few hills to get as high as we could for a bigger view of the landscape.

Time

The photo was shot at Sunset, myself and some fellow photographers were on a day trip and we saw there was a chance of a good sky so we made out way to the coast. Sunset of my favourite time of the day to shoot especially in spring as I believe its when we see the best skies here in Ireland.

Lighting

The lighting is totally what makes this shot. I was lucky to be at this location when it was being lit by the golden sunlight, just before sunset. The warm tones help to create a sense of warmth in the image, even though it would have been quite cold at the time of shooting.

Equipment

I'm very lucky to be shooting with the fantastic Sony A7RII. I shot this with the 24-70 F4 lens, although it might have been nice to have had a wide angle for this shot. Tripod was also used in the shot as I wanted to shoot a slightly longer exposure to help smooth out the wild sea crashing against the coast on the right.

Inspiration

Its a very popular location with photographers and its an area I have driven through many times but never stopped. As I was close to this location near sunset on that particular day it was a must to get there and get a shot for my collection. I got lucky with the light and was delighted ti get a good shot.

Editing

I shoot in RAW so of course post-processing is used. I try to keep images natural but will always enhance the areas that make it more appealing to the eye. All my images start life in Lightroom, but I often use Photoshop and Nik before returning to Lightroom for final tweaks and output. I have spent many years perfecting my workflow but I am also not afraid to try new things and ideas on my images.

In my camera bag

My camera bag consists of my Sony A7RII, my 24-70 F4 Sony Lens, a Sigma 30m Art Lens. I also have a wired trigger for tripod use, my 2 main filter are my CPL filter and 10 Stopper for long exposure work. Other than that its generally cleaning cloths and batteries.

Feedback

If you can get as high as possible at this location and try to time it for the best light.
