Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a small woodland a few miles from my home. I had never visited the area before and thought it was worth checking out to see what treasures I could find. Mushrooms was not something I set off to shoot that day.

Time

I set off to explore the woodland early one Saturday morning. The weather was very changeable as it often is here in Ireland.

Lighting

No additional lighting was used for this shot. I guess I just got lucky with good natural light shining in through the trees.

Equipment

I currently shoot with a Canon 70D and I was using my Tamron 17-50 2.8 Lens for this shot. I was also carrying my Monfrotto Tripod but it was not used for this shot.

Inspiration

I have shot mushroom before and have seen many great mushroom shots. I didn't set out to shoot these this day, my intention was really to check out the woodland area and maybe shoot some atmospheric shots with some nice light shining through the trees. As I was walking through the woodland I spotted some mushrooms and decided to look around for some interesting ones to shoot. I tried to do something different and decided to put the camera on the ground so I was shooting the mushroom from ground level. The Canon 70D with its flip out screen made this possible, although I had to balance the camera on some twigs. I shot a few mushrooms that day but like this little guy best with his little had on.

Editing

Post processing? Of course I did, I'm a believer in good post processing to make you shots stand out from the crowd. This was edited in both Lightroom and Photoshop with the bulk of the work done in Photoshop. My main aim processing was to sharpen the mushroom and make sure the viewers eye does not miss its detail as well as enhancing all the warm autumn colours in the background.

In my camera bag

My normal equipment normally consists of my Canon 70D with my Tamron 17-50 2.8 Lens fitted. I usually carry another lens depending on the location, this day I had my Tamron 70-300 as there might be some interesting wildlife in the woodland to shoot. I also usually carry a CPL Filter and 10 Stop Filter as well as a cable release and my Flash Gun.

Feedback

The best thing I done with this shot is get the camera down to ground level. I have used this many times since and have got some really nice results.
