Church in Kandersteg, Switzerland. Processed this is B&W due to the nice contrast of the clouds, mountains and light foreground of a field of flowers. Also the church building has a multitude of tones. If you look closely their is a waterfall up in the mountains to the right of the steeple.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kandersteg, Switzerland during a hiking trip.

Time

It was about 11:00 AM when I took this shot

Lighting

I had taken a couple shots with the sun shining on the flowers in the foreground as that was what I was focused on. However, as the shadows of the clouds covered the field of wildflowers, I noticed how shadows were forming on the mountains in the background and how the waterfall caught my eye. So it was the changing light that got me to take this photo.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 5D MkII with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 IS USM lens on a Gitzo Tripod with Really Right Stuff Ball Head. I also used a Lee Graduated ND Filter.

Inspiration

As I said above it was first the wildflowers in the field that caught my eye but then the shadows on the mountain and changing light peaked my interest for this image.

Editing

I was looking through my photos to find a candidate for a B&W development and I came across this image and remembered why I captured it. I used LR to develop the image in color then took it to On1 Perfect B&W for final development.

In my camera bag

For this trip I knew we would be doing a lot of walking so I only had my 5DMKII with a 24-105mm f4.0, along with a 16-35 f/2.8 wide angle lens. I also had some filters such as polarizing and a couple of graduated ND filters.

Feedback

I have been trying to improve my B&W work and got some advice from Kcable here on Viewbug, to look up the "Zone System". It is a system developed for B&W film days by Ansel Adams and a way to evaluate your image before taking it. While I did not know this when I took this photo I looked through many photos to find one that would fit the "Zone System". I was looking for an image that had an almost full range of light to dark and with contrast in the image especially the clouds and came across this one. There is much more to the Zone System, to much to write here so just do a search of the term and check it out.
