Not sure how old this little guy is but compared to the others in the herd he was small. He was a bit curious and gave us a good looking over. When he was running to keep up with the others his trunk would swing back and forth quite a bit and looked funny. Saw on third day of photo safari at Cheetah Plains, South Africa

Thank you Gigi. As you have noticed it has been awhile since I have been on VB. Just to much going on since my mother-in-law passed and we took some time for ourselves to just get away to see our sons. Been to California to see one now on way to Hawaii to see the other.

Another beauty of Africa, I am still hoping that one day human's lives will worth more than wildlife. Voted Discover Africa!

Well an Elephants life is only worth the ivory the poachers steal from the dead and at the rate it is happening maybe no elephants in the wild in 20 years. Thanks for the vote

My wife told me to get a hobby when I retired and I have done just that. Learned some early on from my father in film days, you can read about that in my 'About'. I do enjoy it along with travel. Thanks. You do very well also I might add. Cheers.

Behind The Lens

Location
This was the third day of my first ever trip to Africa and we were at a camp called Cheetah Plains in South Africa.
Time
We had just started our evening game drive and it was about 4:00 PM in the afternoon when we came across this elephant and it's mother
Lighting
The light was not soft yet and I was using a long lens (300mm) and with the light the way it was the light grass in the background was a bit of a problem so I used a wide aperture to help blur the background.
Equipment
I used a Canon 50D with an EF 300mm f/4 lens handheld.
Inspiration
The curiosity of this elephant as well as how the ears stuck and the direct look toward us just caught my eye.
Editing
I used lightroom to develop this image and had to adjust the Highlights, Shadows, Blacks and Whites. I did not make any color adjustments or change the white balance. I also sharpened for the web on export.
In my camera bag
I have two bags and each has a purpose. The bag with my 5DMKII (Full Frame Camera) has my 16-35mm f/2.8, 24-105mm f4.0 and 70-200 f/2.8, mainly for everything except wildlife. Bag with the 50D (APS-C) has 24-70 f/2.8 and 300mm prime is mainly for wildlife. If I am traveling by car I take it all. If traveling overseas only bag one goes unless going for wildlife, for that I take bag one with both cameras and swap 70-200 for 300 prime.
Feedback
Most important advice is to really plan your trip and get a good travel agent for Africa. Also practice hand holding shots with a long lens. I tend to use my 50D due to the crop sensor instead of my full frame camera as it allows me to get a tighter shot. However, the my 50D is not a real great low light camera and that is another thing you really need as most photos on a Photo Safari are taken early morning or in the evening.
