Location
This photo was taken on the Southwest side of Argentine pass in Montezuma, CO while on a hike.Time
This photo was taken in the early evening as the sun was setting behind the mountains to the west.Lighting
I was hiking back down the pass as it was beginning to get dark. As I was coming down this southwest facing ridge very suddenly the sun appeared through the clouds and gave this great effect as the beams passed through the ambient smoke created by fires in Washington State. I was happy that I had my camera in my hand and not in my pack when this happened, as it didn't last long.Equipment
At the time I was using a very old Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D). Attached to the body was a Quantaray 19-35mm f3.5-4.5. No filters, tripod or other equipment was used.Inspiration
As a hobbyist landscape photographer, I just carry a camera wherever I go. I was out taking pictures of the beautiful Colorado landscape that evening while also enjoying a hike. I was getting disappointed with my images due to the poor light and the haze in the air from the wildfires. I had just about given up hope and was heading back down the mountain when this lighting appeared without warning.Editing
This image was achieved using 10 separate images that were layered together to balance the lighting. Beyond that just basic adjustments were done in Adobe Lightroom. In my camera bag
Back when this photo was taken I carried much more than I needed to. That evening I had my camera, 4 lenses, shoe flash, extra batteries and CF cards, and a tripod. Now that I have upgraded everything I just carry the body, 2 lenses, tripod and extra batteries.Feedback
Get off the beaten path. I see thousands of pictures from common places in Colorado that take very little effort to get to. If you want to capture an image that no one has seen before, go places that no one has been before.
