Sunrise at St. Clair Beach, Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand taken mid-autumn of 2015.
The beach and the dunes are often the victims of erosion if weather patterns see series of storms hit the city from the south. The erosion is a long-term ongoing concern, as evidenced by attempts at beach protecting begun in 1904 which saw the addition of sturdy wooden piles and windbreaks to the beach. The last surviving sets of wooden posts from these efforts are a landmark of St Clair Beach.

Location
The photo was taken at St. Clair Beach in Dunedin, New Zealand.Time
The photo was taken at sunrise, around 7:16 in a cold autumn morning with some mates. We are about to take a sunrise shoot somewhere else that day but was not able to wake up early and decided to shoot just nearby our place. The sunrise on that place didn't disappoint us.Lighting
It's our first time shooting in this beach so we didn't expect what type of lighting we will get during sunrise but we were prepared for the unexpected with our gears. The light of the sunrise was enough but needed to do manual focusing on the posts with flashlight.Equipment
I've used a Canon 60D with EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens on a tripod. I also used the wireless intervalometer to eliminate shaking in the shutter. Settings: 16mm/ƒ/22/ 7s/ ISO 100 Filters: Lee GND filter.Inspiration
The variety of color of sunrise inspires me and on this day we were given a vibrant burning color. There's no day that is the same in terms of capturing sunrises. Also, you will see how the posts stood the test of time. It is actually a windbreaker.Editing
Did some post-processing on the raw file using Adobe Lightroom to bring vibrancy to the color, tone down highlights and enlighten some shadow. In my camera bag
I usually have the wide lens (10-22mm) and the 70-200mm handy. Of course, I always have tripod and graduated filters to shoot landscapes in long exposures. I also always bring the wireless intervalometer.Feedback
Plan ahead or arrive at your location early before sunrise. Take a survey of the place you want to capture beforehand so you will not have a hard time setting up your gear on the day or time you want to capture sunrise. You will only have a few minutes to shoot a sunrise so you don't want to waste time on just setting up.
