Behind The Lens

Location

On a tall ship sailing in the Southern Cyclades off the coast of the island of Rhodes.

Time

It was first light on the foredeck. I moved toward the stern on the starboard side with the rising sun leeward, backlighting the rigging.

Lighting

I wanted a high contrast, back lighted view of the geometry aboard a 4 masted tall ship. It was built in Sweden as a modern version of a tall ship design last in use in 1912.

Equipment

Nikon D7000

Inspiration

The rigging of a 4 masted tall ship is fascinating in its design and application of scientific observation in harnassing the wind. At night, the captain used the engines to keep on schedule to the several ports of call along our way. But at first light, the engines were shut down, the sails were unfurled and raised all the way to the top gallants. The captain celebrated the dawn each day by piping music by Vangelis everywhere aboard the ship. The sensation of being under sail, plying the deep royal blue of the sea off the Turkish Coast, was simultaneously exhilarating and immensely tranquil. The sounds of the water, the wind, the ruffing of a sail, and the birds transported my mind while the ship took me across the sea. It was the closest I've come to time travel into a bygone era.

Editing

I changed it to black and white, fooled a bit with tones, contrast. Then I applied a sepia filter and adjusted again with tones, contrast. I avoided any sharpening so as to avoid jaggies. Also, the Nikon was set to maximum data capture using RAW.
