Location
My wife asked me to take a series of photos of seashells against a black background to put in our beach house. After much experimentation with lighting, settings, software, etc. This was one we had printed 18 x 18 on canvas.Time
Entirely shot in the basement under artificial lights, so I worked on these seashell photos at all hours.Lighting
I used a 200 watt tungsten bulb in an aluminum reflector from one direction, and several other small incandescent lights at other angles.Equipment
Nikon P8100 on a tripodInspiration
My wife saw some artwork and suggested the ideaEditing
Yes, the background is done with software as the black cloth I used originally didn't absorb enough of the lighting. In my camera bag
I now use a Nikon D7000 with a 35 mm F1.8 and an 18-200 mm VR II zoom, both Nikon lenses with neutral density and UV filters attached, and a battery grip. The other major pieces are spare batteries, two chargers, and a Manfrotto tripod.Feedback
There is no formula and everything depends on the lighting arrangement. This was trial and error. I took hundreds of shots to get what I wanted.
