Taken at Phinda Private Game Reserve, a 170 km² private game reserve situated in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa between the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park. I was in an open Toyota Land Cruiser in a road up which a small herd of elephants clearly wanted to travel, but we were in the way. The leading female, with a young calf in tow, made a low-frequency noise, at which the largest bull in the herd suddenly stopped browsing among the trees and started at a moderate pace to let us know we had better move out of the way. The ranger clearly spoke elephant, put the vehicle in reverse and we got out of the way right quick, but not before I got this shot.
