Location
I was driving home to my mothers place which is a town called Nundle in New South Wales, Australia, as I made a left turn to take the last 40km's to her home I spotted this tree.Time
This photo was taken at 19:07 in 2011Lighting
What made me stop the car and jump out was the sunset with an approaching storm and how the light was making this tree out as a lonely survivor. With out the orange and blue there would not have been a picture. To me lighting is an essential key to a photograph.Equipment
for this photo I sed a Canon 7D with a Canon kit lens EF-S 18-200mm (f/3.5-5.6 IS) I shot this at 50 mm allowing for the approaching storm to capture the tree. I shot this hand held as I did not have a Tripod at the time and I took 3 captures at 2 stops apart on either side so I had at least the dynamic range. I shot in Aperture priority. The photo I chose to post process was 1/80 f/8.0 ISO100.Inspiration
I love the beauty of the tree being painted with the orange sunset, and the incoming storm that was approaching making the tree seem all alone and isolated. Also the fact that sometimes just seeing what you think may be a spur of the moment photo can be your most rewarded photo if taken with care and not over processed.Editing
I use Lightroom to post process and I always shoot in Raw allowing me the latitude to bring out the beauty of the scene I took. Generally I start with the top panel and work my way through the rest of the panels pushing the whites and blacks and a little clarity. Some times I may use photoshop to get rid of some pesky grass as I shot this picture over some distance and content aware I feel is best sorted in Photoshop allowing for a non destructive process. In my camera bag
I carry I wide range of gear, I use Canon products such as the Canon 1DX and The Canon 7D mkii, but recently I have been using the Sony mirrorless system A6000 & the a7ii as I love it pureness with colour and I now have the sigma mount converter MC-11 which now allows me to use all of my Canon glass. Most of my glass I now use are of the higher quality such as the 17mm TSE lens 70-200mm 2.8 pro series lens etc due the subjects that I shoot. However all though I may have these lenses and high end camera I find the best piece of equipment I have is my eyes and brain and I use it instead of the cameras brain, and now I shoot in manual mode which I feel now allows me to take full use of my camera and lenses making for much more interesting photos and much less photos being taken.Feedback
See the LIGHT, Seize the LIGHT and most of all capture the LIGHT and your subject no matter what is will prosper and will make your photography and picture taking rewarding. Secondly shoot in Manual it is not hard and there are many tutorials all over the internet to teach you believe me it will make your picture shine as it makes you have to slow down go back to my first statement, See the LIGHT, Seize the LIGHT and most of all capture the LIGHT. Thirdly enjoy your photography and get out there and shoot as with practice you can learn and with learning you can only become a better Photographer. Lastly get feedback from other photographers and take all criticism good and bad and cipher through it and take the best bits of information and apply it to your photography, then and only then will you become a photographer and not a picture snapper.
