Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot on the edge of Lake Tekapo, South Island of New Zealand.. The Church name is " The Church of the Good Shepherd"

Time

I drove all the way from Dunedin in the lower part of New Zealands south Island to take this shot, I got there roughly around 5ish so and it took me 3hrs to get there. I wanted a morning shoot with clouds and as you can guess it was cold as I shot this during winter. I have photographed this building many times but my intention was to slow my shoot right down using a Nd Filter a tripod and a long exposure.

Lighting

Lighting was good lots of blue but that didn't matter as my intention was to make this A strong B&W shot

Equipment

I used a Canon 7d with Battery grip, A Really right stuff carbon fibre tripod and a BH55 ball head for smooth movement, after composing the shot I placed a Lee Big Stopped ND filter (10 Stops ). I also a promote control to time my exposure

Inspiration

I love this church and the location and every time I go past I always stop and take some photos hoping that one day I will get the ultimate shot.

Editing

I used Lightroom and silver effexs Pro to create black and white but mostly the picture was already there I just used Silver Effexs to give me the vision I hoped for.

In my camera bag

I have so much now to name but I am a Canon man through and through my main bodies now are a Canon 1DX and 2 Canon 7D's with battery grips making for easier handling I have all the glass I need including 70-200mm 2.4L etc

Feedback

My advice is this if you can go back to a site many times then I would as weather changes like the seasons and have lots of patience. I try and shoot from low down so that I get a feeling of height, perspective and and depth and move around because who knows you may just get that shot that will make you are star. Lake Tekapo is high in the Southern Alps and during winter you will feel the cold so make sure you are dressed appropiately and take fingerless gloves and be prepared depending on camera that it might stop due to the cold conditions. My 7D stopped during a shoot in the South Island so I just placed in the car with heater on for 30 mins with heater on low and it started again perfectly and please don't wipe of condensation just give your lens time to adjust to the temp and all will be find. Finally if you cant get back to a place where you have taken a photo shoot 5 frames of exposure with two under exposed by 1 stop each a correct exposure and 2 over exposed by 2 stops and 1 between each one i.e. ( -2 -1 0 +1 +2 )and then when you get home take a look and work with the one you think is the best and keep the rest just incase you wish to do a HDR or play around with exposures and this also gives you a reference as to what exposure may be suited due to conditions and surroundings as the camera a may not get it right and always shoot in RAW as this gives you a far greater chance of recovery if your exposure is a little of. Also take time to enjoy the scenery as there may be another photo around.
