Congratulations on the win. This is absolutely stunning. Perfect mystical lighting, lush clarity, depth, layers, texture, organic, and then 'him'. Small but ever so present. Love love this.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the Blue Ridge Parkway one very foggy morning. My absolute favorite to photograph.

Time

It was fairly early as to capture the fog, before the sun burnt it away.

Lighting

As you can imagine, the forest can be a dark and difficult place to photograph. The fog just makes easier because it diffuses the light in a good way. I did have to open up the shadows in post because of the darkness.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7100 with the Nikkor 16-85 and no tripod this time. I tend to not use it - yes, bad practice I know - but hiking through a forest carrying a heavy tripod gets old. I also find that it hinders my creativity with finding the right composition. When I hike, I see the perfect opportunity and it does not wait for my tripod. I just go with the moment.

Inspiration

The Blue Ridge Parkway inspires me. It is like the perfect elixir for creativity. Every tree inspires me. The light inspires me. And the fog is a challenge to get right and also perfect to photograph. And when I saw the long path with that light at the end...perfect composition.

Editing

Yes. I had to open up the shadows and work with the highlights. (my usual) I added a little yellow to the overall photo to bring out the greens of the trees and the falls leaves. And I positioned my man right where I wanted him: walking towards the light.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D7100 and the D90; Nikkor 16-85 and my 18-140; several filters - rarely use them -; several memory cards; extra battery; a couple of remotes; and that is about it. I am simple with my equipment.

Feedback

I would say: plan but go with the moment. See your scene if you know what I mean. I always look at the scene and think it is going to be an award winning photo. Immerse your self in it. I look for interesting compositions, interesting details in the scene through the viewfinder. I experiment. By using different settings and checking your photos, you can adjust as you go. And don't always follow the rules. Photography is art and art knows no rules.
