I took this photo at my little home studio in Kingston, Jamaica. It is where I do most of my indoor portrait work.Time
This shot was taken at 6:15 pm, just as it was getting dark as a brighter ambient light would have affected the outcome.Lighting
I had to add an extra light because the candles weren't bright enough to light the model's face. I used the Viltrox L116T LED light kit. It is a continuous lighting setup slightly above the model and then I added a bit warming gel (yellow plastic easy found at a pharmacy) to try to match the candles warm glow.Equipment
I shot this with Canon 7D Mark ii and Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Shutter 1/200, Aperture f/9, ISO 200 I used Viltrox L116T LED light kit (video kit light) to assist the candles on her shoulder.Inspiration
We had been doing some candle shots and the model decided she wanted to do a shot with them on the shoulders. We tried to put the candles on her bare skin but it was too painful so she decided to use her jacket instead. That's how we came up with this wonderful image.Editing
In this shot I used Lightroom and Photoshop. I edited for skin blemishes using frequency separation and then adjust the warming a bit more using hue layers. The image is already dark so i just do a little dodging on the highlights. In my camera bag
Whenever I have to work outside of the studio, I pack my trusty 50mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8. Prime lenses just make life easier. Depending on my plans I will take my 70-200mm f2.8 or my Tonika 16-28mm f/2.8. Tripod for Landscape shots or Godox TT600 for extra lighting on a outdoor shoot along with Canon 7D or 5D.Feedback
Be one with darkness. I know many photographers want to fill their image with light and it's perfectly fine but to challenge myself, I tend to play with blacks and shadows a lot. Make sure you are collaborating with like minded people that can help lift and inspire as the model did in this shoot.
