Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the entrance of a traditional restaurant in Kyoto. The maiko (apprentice geisha) was just lifting the Noren (the fabric covering the entrance) to welcome visitors.

Time

Captured in the early afternoon, a rather unusual time for a maiko to be welcoming customers...

Lighting

Nothing to say - natural lighting, with an overcast sky.

Equipment

I used my trusted Nikon D850 with a 24-70 f2.8 zoom. The photo is taken at a focal length of 70 mm, at f/4.0.

Inspiration

When I saw it, I had to capture the scene!

Editing

As usual, I did the basic raw processing in LR. Cropping, redressing the frame, tonal adjustments, slight vignette, brush touches on her skin, sharpness. I then used Photoshop to enhance the light and change the mood by warming the scene.

In my camera bag

I seldom go out without my Nikon D850, and my two favorite lenses, namely the 70-200 zoom and its little brother, the 24-70 mm zoom.

Feedback

I like to walk around the city, with open eyes and an open mind. I'm lucky because I live in Kyoto and it's a magical city. So many scenes left and right. Kyoto is such a photogenic place!
