Behind The Lens

Location

Sterling Illinois, This single tree has been a favorite subject over the years.

Time

Mid morning, There was an intense fog and it was cold enough that the moisture clung to everything.

Lighting

The fog was defusing the light and gave everything kind of a glow.

Equipment

Oddly enough I shot this with my iPhone, During the winter months I am the director of a homeless shelter. So was doing shelter stuff this morning so I didn't have my regular equipment. Over the years I have taken some pretty nice images with my iPhone. the key is to pre-visualize like you would do with any image, and take your time and consider what your camera can do.

Inspiration

It was one of those unique situations that only happen every once and awhile, My town sit next to the Rock River and during the winter months it has large section that don't freeze because of the dam's and levee's. So when the temperature is just right it is all kinds of fun.

Editing

I shoot mainly in raw so there are always kind of a standard process I use for images, This how ever was a Jpeg. My photoshop training has been more informal then it should be I guess. So I use the camera raw filter in photoshop to do most of my processing, including black and white images. With Black and white the key is to play with the contrast to create the light and dark area's the way I like them. My first year of college back in the 80's spent the whole year learning everything to do with black and white. So Ansel Adam's Negative and Print books were required reading, I feel that thought process now helps me process black and white digital images. I still believe they are 2 books still worth reading.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D500, and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. I aslo care 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes.

Feedback

I usually post the same advice on the Behind the Lens Features. I have started teaching some and in my preparation for that I have noticed what I consider a disturbing trend. Learn how to use your gear! I don't mean what every fancy feature of your camera can do, but the basics! Photography isn't about technology, I see so many photographers use only the automatic setting, and then asking what setting do I use for this, or for that. Learn how to use your equipment in manual! Learn the basics of your exposure triangle. Your shutter, aperture, and ISO all have a function, and not only control exposure, they also equip you with the knowledge of what those do in different situation. Then when you know that you will have the knowledge to use your auto setting when it benefits in the shooting situation you might find yourself in. The second thing is to remember is photography is an art, and a knowledge of composition and pre-visualization. Lastly get out and shoot! You can't get a great shot if your not out shooting. I have told people that I get lucky now and again on some of my shots. The truth is you have to get out there and put yourself into situation that you can take advantage of the opportunity that presents itself. So the harder you work the luckier you get.
