Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Little Nugget Farm, my daughter's Farm. She has several horses of her own, and 3 boarders. Brooks, here, belongs to one of her boarders. Brooks is a 5 year old, full Canadian Gelding. I was in the pasture trying to keep this friendly creature from getting too close. He's very curious and wants to have your attention. It was actually difficult to do. I was simply trying to capture some non-run-of-the-mill horse shots. Horses can be pretty tough to shoot extraordinary shots.

Time

This was taken at Mid-day. I had just driven back from picking up my Granddaughters at preschool. They were snoring in their car seats, and I needed to check on the horses water. I watch my Grands quite often, and live, basically across the field from them. I had my camera, and decided to try to get some shots. It was windy, and I love the way Brooks flowing mane comes alive in the wind.

Lighting

Natural Light. The sun was almost straight overhead. With some clouds.

Equipment

I use a Canon 60D. This was with a Sigma 18-300, at 18 mm. Handheld. Natural light. I was kneeling a little ways from him shooting up. 1/160 at f/5.0, ISO 100.

Inspiration

I see these horses almost daily. And I've been itching to try and capture some unique images of them. And I knew my daughter and her boarders would really appreciate shots of their Riding Pals. They did, and Brooks' owner absolutely loved this image. She has it in her home, framed.

Editing

Post processing- Lightroom, and then into Luminar. Total fun.

In my camera bag

Besides extra battery, and charger, and the cleaning stuff, I usually carry my Canon with the 18-300 already attached. It is a terrific walk around lens. I also usually carry my 50 mm 1.8, my 100 Macro. I have a number of other lens, but these are my go-tos. I also, have rain gear both for camera, for the bag and for myself, cause you just never know.

Feedback

I'm still learning how to capture the beauty, and grace of these wonderful animals. I've loved horses since I was a little girl. Admittedly, more of my shots are ordinary, than extraordinary. I'd say my best advice is PATIENCE. It takes a lot of patience to follow a horse around a pasture snapping images, or trying to keep him from being in your space wanting attention. The other best advice is to take MANY images. You never know when an angle might be kind of wonky, so don't be static. Move all around and up and down. I even thought about under, but i didn't know this guy quite that well. It is worth it if even one captures what you are striving to portray. Creativity and beauty are there. It's just finding it and coaxing it to you.
