Location
This image was captured at New Moon Farm, my daughter’s horse farm. It was actually taken inside her barn, though, I normally shoot outdoors.Time
I love my daughter’s farm & horses, and Captain here is one of my favorite horses on the farm. He is a 21 year old Arabian and still moves like a weanling! He happened to be in the barn waiting on the farrier. It was about 10 am and I was just there playing around shooting. I love horses & shooting them & trying to get an image that stands out can be quite a feat. Their angles & lines can work for or against you!Lighting
Of course, the eyes of any creature is captivating, but a horse’s eye is large & very reflective & seems to immerse you in their world. I wanted to capture the wonderful light spilling through the breezeway and moved around till I was satisfied.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 60d. A Canon 24-105 mm lens accompanied. Almost always handheld.Inspiration
Horses are simply inspiration enough. Their movement, their quiet contentment, their character, the depth of their spirit speaks to me. So fairly frequently I try to grab my gear and just walk around the farm.Editing
Typically I import in to Lightroom and process. Nothing fancy with this one. Basic adjustments of sharpening, highlights, and such was all I decided to do. I didn’t want to detract from the splendor of Captain’s eye itself. In my camera bag
It truly varies. Since this photo I have acquired some new lens, and added a 6d Mark ii full frame camera. I am fascinated by much & love many types of photography & carry any number of lens. It just depends on my mood, the location, and the subject. Often I carry both the 60d & the 6d. My present favorite lens is my 70-200 2.4 lens. I need to take this lens on a walkabout amongst the horses! It would be awesome.Feedback
In shooting the eyes themselves I think the 100mm Macro would be terrific. The 24-105 did nicely. I want to try my 70-200 though I will have to take a step back. And then if you want to be creative or surreal any of LensBaby lens could really do the trick. Advice with horses in particular- be quiet, calm & steady. And be smart. Like people temperaments vary greatly. Your movements should be slow, not jerky or quick. I usually approach the horses in the pasture. Let them know I’m around. Offer a pat, quiet words, & for them to take a look and sniff of my camera. As it is around my neck it is an extension of me. Just show them respect like any living animal. And always get permission to shoot these beauties from their owners if you are going to be up close & personal with these magnificent animals.
