Behind The Lens

Location

In North Iceland, near the village of Laugar. The name of the waterfall is Goðafoss (Godafoss).

Time

It was a cold morning today when I and my spouse drove with our 9 month old son to Godafoss. We live only 10 minutes away from it, but it takes time to gear up the baby for being outside in the Icelandic winter :) I was experimenting with my new AF-P Nikkor 10-22mm 1:4.5-5.6G that I got for Christmas and this is the result using my worn out Nikon D5300. It was too windy for tripod but nevertheless I used it. The waterfall "Godafoss" is closely connected with one of the most important event in our history in Iceland, the conversion to Christianity from heathendom or "the old custom" in the year 1000. According to the sagas (Íslendingabók) Godafoss got its name following an event in the year 999 or 1000. The Lawspeaker of the Althing at Thingvellir (Icelandic Parliament) was somebody named Thorgeir Ljósvetningagodi , a gentleman farmer of the Ljósavatn farm, 2 kilometers from the waterfall. The Vikings believed traditionally in many pagan gods. Led by Thorgeir the Althing decided to make the conversion to the Christian faith. When Thorgeir came back (in the year of conversion) from Thingvellir, he decided to throw all the wooden statues of pagan gods into the waterfall, and thus take away from the symbolic belief in pagan gods.

Lighting

When photographing Godafoss, I wait for days that have clouds in the sky in the background. It is hard to photograph from this angle because most of the time it's backlit.

Equipment

NIkon d5300, AF-P Nikkor 10-22mm 1:4.5-5.6G, Manfrotto tripod, Remote shutter in my other hand, and a Lee ND filter in one hand, moving the filter in circles in front of the lens because I don't have a filter mount on the lens and it's almost to small for the lens.

Inspiration

That inspires me to photograph Godafoss is fist of all, it's few minutes drive from my home, and it is a magnificent scenery.

Editing

Post processing yes. I dry to get details from the sky and cloud. Then I get whites up in the snow. Clarity and some dehaze to the stream. Some post vignetting and fixed color balance.

In my camera bag

Along with my new AF-P Nikkor 10-22mm 1:4.5-5.6G, my worn-out bag includes Nikon D5300, two extra batteries, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC lens, AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens, AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor ED 55-200mm F4-5.6G lens, remote shutter, lens cleaning cloths and chocolate. Chocolate is the most essential thing to carry when driving the center highland of Iceland. Of course food, water and other survival essentials are needed, but standing in a great landscape, waiting for the right lighting calls for good Icelandic chocolate.

Feedback

Come to North Iceland, skip the south part ;) Domestic airlines take you from the International airport in Keflavik straight to Husavik in the north. Then you have access to waterfalls and the diamond of Icelandic nature, Lake Myvatn.
