Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Iceland and the location is pretty close to the famous Skogafoss waterfall, but you need to know where to go to be able to find it. There is a massive fantastic waterfall just behind my back so most people would shoot that instead of shooting this direction.

Time

Should be around midday, around 12 o’clock. But since it started raining as I was taking this image, the light was beautiful and soft.

Lighting

I don’t think the same image would work on a sunny day, but I would be interested to try.

Equipment

I had my Fujifilm XT-2 with 10-24mm on it with I believe 10mm, used the gitzo mountaineer tripod in the lowest position resting on some slippery rocks. I think i used the 10 stop filter to really slow down the water.

Inspiration

I love silky water shots, love moss and love Iceland. As I was leaving the waterfall location, I spotted this angle and thought I’d give it a shot.

Editing

Some contrast and saturation tweeks in Nik Collection.

In my camera bag

It all depends on the job, but for landscapes I love the widest angle possible, so ultra-wide angle lens is a must. I love silky water and very blue polarized sky, so filters are essential. 10 stop ND and a rotating polarizer. Recently I bought formatt-hitech filters and am pretty happy with them. Tripod is a must! If you are shooting landscapes and tend to change lenses often, don’f Forget to pack a blower, because editing that dust can be very annoying.

Feedback

If you see a pretty scene but the sky is not impressive, go low. Make sure your shutter speed is at least 1 second for that water effect. And try not to fall in water... having wet feet really kills motivation.
