Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my back yard. San Tan Valley, Arizona.

Time

It was early evening, not dark, but the yard is shawdowed which is why I had to use a flash. Clear photos could be achieved, but without direct sunlight you couldn't see the colors of the feathers.

Lighting

I had to get my speed, ISO and aperature settings just using the hummingbird feeder as my focal guide.

Equipment

I used my Canon T3i with my 75-300mm zoom. I just had to stand and wait for a hummer to fly into frame. I would take test shots and wait.

Inspiration

Trying to catch the hummers on film was something I aspired to do from the day I got my camera. I like to show my photos to friends and family to share things I see. I was also challenging myself to catch a hummer "paused" in flight.

Editing

Other than cropping the image I don't exactly recall what else I did. I may have toned the flash down and deepened the shadows a bit.

In my camera bag

I always have the camera, the 75-300 and my 18-55. Spare batteries and remote, cleaning supplies and whatever I think may be handy.

Feedback

You have to preset and be patient. I spent time just letting the little guys get used to me being out in the yard all the time. After some study I realized trying to catch them in flight clearly was going to be tough. I would just aim at the bird feeder and wait. Usually as soon as the flash goes off the birds would be gone for a bit.
