Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home. It was a spur of the moment since I was already taking pics. I just wanted to experiment with different lighting while my step-daughter had her hair down.

Time

It was evening so it would be dark as could be in the house to set this lighting up.

Lighting

I only had a large piece of black material as a backdrop and a couple of spot-light style desk lamps. If I do this again I will move the lamps to be more behind my subject. I just adjusted settings until I got the effect I wanted.

Equipment

I used my Canon T3i with the 18-55 lens. Camera was mounted on a Dolica tripod. Lighting provided by whatever I could gather which happened to be a couple of desk lamps.

Inspiration

I have been studying and learning by watching others. My daughter's hair catching sunlight inspired me to experiment with lighting, that basically, I thought would make for a cool effect.

Editing

I did the BW conversion from the color original. Also did some slight adjusting of the light and shadow to get this final product. That was it for this photo.

In my camera bag

I always have my gear in my back pack where ever I go. The Canon T3i and a couple lenses. The 18-55 and the 300mm zoom, both Canon. I keep a cord for charging and transfers, spare batteries and both a hard drive and jump drive. I also have some light cleaning supplies and the Canon wireless remote.

Feedback

It's digital, as a friend says, the film is free! Got an idea to try there is no reason not to try and give it a go. I have spent many frustrating hours setting up and learning only to not get my desired results. Patience (like I have a lot of that), practice and repetition have been my keys to success. I had to re-learn how to not be angry from disappointing results and use those experiences as teachable moments for myself. My sunsets and glowing scorpions were the results of lots of shutter clicks.
