I worked in New Zealand for a year in 2012-2013 and was so grateful for the opportunities to photograph the beauty of the South Island. This photo was taken on a tour of the Penguin Place Conservation Reserve on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin. The yellow-eyed penguin is on the endangered species list The group was in a "hide" observing the behavior of the penguins. This "couple" were taking care of their chicks. We watched dad bring the chicks food. They were quite verbose about their requests. Capturing this tender moment between the penguins was luck it seems.Time
I believe this was taken in the afternoon as we toured the reserveLighting
I wanted the viewers of this photo to hone in on the tenderness and care that the animal kingdom can give us.Equipment
I had with me on this trip just my Coolpix P510. I was just beginning to nurture my interest in photography and now would love to experience NZ again with new photography equipment.Inspiration
I wanted to tell a story of the parents' care of their young and this is one of the photos in that story. They others record dad going to get food, mom resting, chicks "crying" for food and then being fed.Editing
This photo had minimal to no processing. At the time I was using this camera I stored photos on a MAC computer and downloaded to memory cards to put on my home computer when I returned to the States. They then went into iPhoto on my MAC laptop and I utilized that editing program for some of the photos. I believe this one was cropped but no major post-processing was done. only utilized the I now am using lightroom and will soon with transferring my NZ photos to that editing program and hopefully be posting more of these. In my camera bag
Right now I have move on to a Nikon D750 with a nikon 24-120 1:4G lensFeedback
Be patient and let the shots come to you when shooting in the wild and with animals and birds. Tell a story with their behavior to draw the viewer in.
