Location
This image was taken at St. Clair Beach, Dunedin, New Zealand. I was in Dunedin for business and took the opportunity to do some photography in and around Dunedin.Time
The day before, it was raining. I wasn't sure if we'd get a decent sunrise, I woke at 6AM as saw that the sky was clear. I nearly missed it, as the sunrise was 6:40, so I quickly got dressed and headed out to the beach. I'd gone there the evening before, so knew what I wanted and where to go.Lighting
This early in the morning, the light was just fantastic. This is a merge of 5 images of different exposures, to get the detail in the shadows.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 6D and a sigma 12mm-24mm lens, at 12mm and F/10. I love shooting at 12mm, it allows me to accentuate the foreground object. I have a carbon fibre Manfrotto tripod, which enables me to place the camera wherever I want to put it.Inspiration
I knew about the old wharf at St.Clair's beach, but I didn't realize there was so little left of it. I'd headed out there the evening before and planned the shot. I was lucky that the sunrise coincided with low tide on the only day I was there. I feel the person and his dog add to the picture, that was a stroke of good luck too.Editing
I post-process all my images, as I shoot in raw only. After some basic processing, I merging 5 images in Photomatix Pro.In my camera bag
I usually carry my Canon 6D, a Sigma 12-24mm, a Tamron 24-70mm and a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 with image stabilisation. Sometimes I'll also pack my Canon 450D Infrared converted body and if I think I'll be doing any street photography, I'll pack the 50mm F/1.8. Apart from that, I always carry an assortment of ND filters, spare batteries and SD cards and a cable release.Feedback
My advice is, plan your photos. Know where you're going and if possible what to expect when you get there. My best photos are the ones which I had planned. I have taken some good pictures where I was in the right place at the right time, but I have a better success rate, the more planning I put in to a shoot.
