Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand

Time

it was just past midday, so probably not the best time of day, luckily, the sun was partly obscured by some light clouds.

Lighting

The sunlight was pretty harsh, so I timed the shot for when a cloud just started to roll past the sun, to diffuse it a little.

Equipment

This was taken handheld with a Canon 700D and a Tamron 70-200mm, taken at F/2.8 and 167mm focal length at 1/500s.

Inspiration

I've always loved the textures of the pachyderm's skin, so I tried to capture that in this photo.

Editing

I did quite a bit of post-processing, including adding a high pass filter and setting the light to linear, to bring out the texture. A heavy vignette removed some distractions and turning it black and white finished it off.

In my camera bag

The Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 is my favorite lens and is used for portraiture, wildlife and even some landscape photography, but when I want to go wide, I pull out my 12-24mm Sigma. Since this photo was taken, I have upgraded to a Canon 6D full-frame.

Feedback

So this photo is all about the post-processing and bringing out the skin texture. To do that, I duplicated the layer in photoshop and applied a high pass filter. I tried several blending modes, but settled on linear. If the effect is not strong enough, that highpass filter can be duplicated. If it's too strong, then just set the opacity to something less that 100%.
