This is off of Hwy 112 in northern Wisconsin, around the Benoit area. Love it, it's a route I take very often, we have a camper just north of there.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is an old barn off of a small state highway in the far Northwoods of Wisconsin.

Time

This was taken late afternoon on my way up to my cabin in the woods.

Lighting

This particular day was overcast and it had been snowing on and off all that day. The snow started early that morning and about 6 inches had fallen during the day. Fresh snow always gives a beautiful glow and this snow was a bit heavy and wet so it was sticking to the trees and such, making them pop in the diffused cloudy light. The cloudy day was the reason I stopped to have the fresh white and the red of the barn against the drab of a grey sky.

Equipment

I took this picture out of my car window from the side of the highway, I am a big proponent of carry your camera everywhere! This was taken with a Nikon D3200 and a 70-300 zoom lens. Camera was at F/6.3, shutter at 1/1250 sec, with ISO 200 and the focal length of 150mm.

Inspiration

I have been making this trip up north for over a year and each trip I cataloge in my minds eye the landscapes and interesting things I see to take pictures of. I love this barn and have easily over 100 pictures of it. As fall progressed I knew this was going to be one of my winter stops. I love the snow and the harsh difference between the red and the stark white is perfect. This day was made even better by the lingering clouds.

Editing

I did a little post-processing on this as I wanted the clouds and the greyness of the day to stand out, along with the red of the barn of course. I did some tone mapping to pop what I needed and gave it a soft finish.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded since this picture was taken. At the time it was a Nikon D3200 with the standard lens that has a macro x10 filter on it and my favorite Nikon 70-300 zoom, which I use most of the time. Now I carry a Nikon D7200 with the same lenses and have also added a wide angle and a fish eye lens. Of course I bought a back back to carry it all, sounds crazy but taking photos is such a passion I have to have all my toys with me!

Feedback

For this particular circumstance, how fresh the snow is, how cloudy it is and what timne of day are all important. The best is to catch the snow as soon as it has fallen, or while it is falling is even better. I love the darkness of a cloudy day, but snow in the bright sunshine is awesome too! Either way it is better to get your pictures early in the morning or late in the afternoon, depending on the direction you need to face for your photo. I also take snow shots at a higher shutter as I prefer to start with a darker photo. It leads to having more options to be creative in the post-processing department.
