Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favorite photos from my tour of Upper Antelope Slot Canyons in Page, AZ. The slot canyons are located on the Navajo reservations and this is one of the photo's that made me realize I was actually pretty good with a camera.

Time

We started our tour around 10:30am and headed out with our guide and a full load of people in an all terrain vehicle. This photo was taken around noon, as that's the best time for the sun to be able to shine thorough the slots. I highly recommend touring these slot canyons, as they are amazing and offer many photo opportunities.

Lighting

It's actually rather dark in the slots canyons, so be prepared to use your ISO to assist with getting good shots. Make sure to book the early tours, as that's where you will get the best lighting.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 400D Rebel XTI with a 17-24 Canon L series lens, ISO 800 and f/5. It was also hand held. I have since upgraded to a Canon 80D and am totally in love with my new camera.

Inspiration

I'm a self taught photographer. I have taken a few continuing ed classes at the local university, but all in all have developed my style and abilities over the years. I see photography as my way of expressing myself to the world. I was thrilled when the hubby and I took a desert vacation in the Southwest US a few years ago and made sure we saw the canyons. I was looking for the surreal effect and boy did the canyons deliver!

Editing

I don't use a lot of post processing, as I consider myself a what you see is what you get photographer. I do use Photoshop to adjust contrast, warmth, coldness, etc..., but prefer to keep my photography as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

My backpack consist of my DSLR camera, several lens (wide angle, 50mm, 24-105mm) and usually a point and shoot Canon too. I have a spare SD card, lens cleaning wipes, battery and charger. I keep a pen and notepad to make notes, as my memory isn't as good as it use to be.

Feedback

My advice for trying to capture something similar is that timing is everything. Make sure you arrive early enough to capture the sun directly overhead so the sun beams fall through the slots. Use a lower F stop and a higher ISO especially if you are hand holding. Have fun and enjoy the canyons, as they are breathtaking beautiful!
