Location
This photo was taken during a family gathering to celebrate Labor Day. The woods that surround my house make the perfect backdrop for photos.Time
This was taken in the middle of a summer afternoon in the Northeastern U.S.Lighting
It just happened to be cloudy that day, so I could focus my attention on my niece and her son and not worry about direct sunlight and frustrating shadows on their faces.Equipment
I used a Nikon D80 and an 300mm telephoto lens to achieve a little bokeh. I chose not to use a tripod and I didn't need my off camera flash as the subjects were sitting out in the open and there was plenty of indirect light.Inspiration
I consider taking photos of children and animals to be especially challenging because they never follow directions very well! The fact that little Westin had his shirt off made this shot seem very intimateEditing
Actually, this photo was taken in color and I did use Photoshop to transform it into black and white. It just didn't have the same impact on me in color that it did in black and white, and in doing so, I was able to soften the baby's skin tone quite a bit.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D80 and Nikon D5100 with me. I carry Nikor 18-55mm lenses and polarizing filters for both as well as a Nikor 70-300mm lens and hood for each. I also have a Nikor 50mm f1.8 lens as well as a Lensbaby, a tripod, extra batteries, spare memory cards, charging devices, and a couple of cleaning cloths.Feedback
If you have an opportunity to photograph children or animals, be patient. It took many photos to get just one where the baby was looking directly at me and not blinking at the same time! I was thankful that my perseverance was rewarded with a photo of an intimate moment between a mother and her son.
