This photo was taken at one of the four ponds I have at my home. There is always a lotus or water lily in bloom on any given day in the summer!Time
I got up early on my day off and headed over to my ponds with my equipment. I didn't know what I would find, but I like to check once a day for any buds that may have bloomed. This lotus, a named variety called Mrs. Perry Slocum, had just opened and was beautiful!Lighting
It was early morning and the sun was just peeking over the horizon creating those wonderful flares I was lucky enough to capture in the photo!Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D80, 70-300 lens, f4.2, and ISO 200 using a tripod.Inspiration
The lotus flowers have always been a favorite of mine in my ponds. They are so beautiful, but I had never captured their beauty until this photo was taken. All of the factors necessary for a great photo were present that day; the correct stage of bloom, the perfect lighting and zooming in on the flower to create a nice bokah made a photo that I am proud of!Editing
Quite frequently I use several computer programs to tighten up a photo to my satisfaction. Fortunately for me I did not have to do that with this photo....I loved it just the way it was when I took it.In my camera bag
When shooting away from home, I usually carry a Nikon D80 and a Nikon D5100 with 18-55mm and long lenses for both, speedlights for both, a prime lens, remote trigger, and a tripod.Feedback
I like to try different angles when shooting flowers or animals. In my opinion, shooting at the level of the subject and zooming in tight can create a dramatic photo that will draw the viewers in.
