Like this image, chess pieces & sets can make for great photos as they are available in such a diverse range of sizes, shapes & colours. Very nice.

Location
I took this photo for a project at school, I am a photography major so I constantly get exposed to different kinds of photos that I would not usually try.Time
This photo was taken after a long session in the studio, with my wife giving me words of encouragement after many hours of not capturing anything I liked. It was one of those "Ahh HA" moments while I was arranging the pieces for the shot.Lighting
It was lit with a large soft box directly overhead, and very close to the pieces. My head was rubbing on it the entire time, causing my hair to stand up from the static!Equipment
I shot this with my Nikon D7000 on a 50mm prime fisheye lens.Inspiration
I needed to shoot a still life for my class, after I experimented with a few things I didn't like I acquired a piece of black plexiglass, I liked the mirroring from the black plex as well as the mirroring of the pieces.Editing
Not must post in this pic, I opened up the reflection some to make it stand out more. I also cloned out a couple of seam lines on the pieces that were kind of distracting. In my camera bag
I always have my D7000 with me but recently I got the Nikon 28mm-70mm 2.8. I don't think it's been off my camera since.Feedback
Experiment with everything around you, you never know what is going to make a great shot!
