Location
Vancouver Aquarium in Vancouver, BC Canada.Time
Taken mid afternoon at 3:30 pm.Lighting
Overhead artificial lighting was provided for the aquarium containing its sea creature occupants. To mimic the natural lighting in the ocean, the lighting of the tank was extremely subdued. To ensure that the eels remained in focus for the duration of the exposure a rather high ISO (3,200) was required along with a 1/200 second exposure speed.Equipment
I used a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 105 mm macro lense. No other equipment was used. Due to the subdued lighting of the location shoot, a tripod would have benefited greatly to capture images of the sea creatures in the various aquariums. However, because of the large numbers of people including children visiting the Aquarium on the day of the shoot, which was on a weekend, a tripod would have proved to be both unwieldy and a potential tripping hazard in the din of the facility lighting.Inspiration
What was intriguing in this image was that the eels swayed back in forth in the artificial tide and every so often they would just bury themselves in the sand and then mysteriously reappear just seconds later, to resume their swaying in the tide.Editing
I post processed the image using Lightroom software to correct for the temperature of the lighting and to boost the contrast of the overall image. In my camera bag
On a planned photoshoot I normally carry all of my photo equipment with me. This includes a Nikkor 70-200 telephoto lense, a Nikkor 14-24mm wide angle lense, a Nikkor 105mm macro lense, a Nikkor 1.4X tele converter, a Nikkor DX 35-80mm telephoto lense and a Manfrotto tripod.Feedback
When trying to capture images in facilities, such as Aquariums, that have minimal lighting on their exhibits it is best to do a photoshoot in the middle of the week when the crowds are less and the ability to use of a tripod is ensured.
