Wonderful!!! This took me back to my childhood, when Dad used to take us kids for a ride in our 1949 ford on the 'river road'...we would squeal as we all went air born over the bumps. It was a road very similar to this one. Thanks for the great memory!

The trip of a lifetime comes to mind when I see this image. I love the play with dark sky in distance and beautiful yellow sunlit land!

Location
This is an open area near Rio Vista, California - the Sacramento River Delta area. One of my favorite areas to shoot sweeping landscapes such as this.Time
I shot this later in the afternoon, probably around 5:00.Lighting
The lighting is all natural, gorgeous golden hour light!Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D with a 70-200 2.8L lens. These sat on a Manfrotto 3-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod with a Manfrotto ballhead. I split the legs out wide to get as close to the road as possible.Inspiration
I came over the hill in the direction the photo and instantly saw the rolling road and fields. Also, there was an ominous looking sky in the distance. It really hit me like a rock that this is an image I needed to capture this scene.Editing
I took a 3-bracket HDR, proper exposure and 1-stop over and 1-stop under. Brought it into Lightroom and did a little toning before putting it into Photoshop HDR Pro. Turned the highlights down and pushed the shadows up. I also cleaned up some things along the horizon and darkened that area a but to give the image a more sinister feel, like you're heading into a desolate unknown. I adjusted the saturation just a touch to really bring out the oranges and yellowsIn my camera bag
Now I have a Canon 5D MKIII, a 16-35 2.8L II, a 24-70 2.8L II, the 70-200 2.8L with which I shot this. A 50 1.8. 85 1.8, and a 100 Macro. I also have a Sigma 150-500 that I rarely use. Various filters and other goodies, a couple of 580 EX flashes, triggers and other odds and ends.Feedback
With a lot of images I capture, but especially this one, it hit me as I saw it unfold in front of me. I didn't question the feeling in my gut. So I strongly suggest that when a scene presents itself to you and you feel in deep in your being, don't ignore that. Stop and capture the scene. This isn't a particularly scenic area in the sense of the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area, but this is why I love the area - there are some gems to be found. Also, be open to stepping out of the conventional landscape idea that you need to shoot as wide angle as possible. This scene would not have been nearly as powerful if shot with a wider angle lens. Once you get it into an editing program let the magic happen.
