Behind The Lens

Location

"Grow Good Together" is the message found on of the exterior walls of Tweed, a subsidiary of Canopy Growth located in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada. Canopy Growth offers assorted edible cannabis products, including the widest variety of seeds in the legal Canadian sector.

Time

I often drive to Smiths Falls as it is a short distance from the village in which we live. I had always seen this mural on my return home. With our van full of groceries and other shopping, I had repeatedly told myself that I must take the time to shoot some pictures of it. A decent picture of the mural is not possible from the road. So, finally, on a cool, grey mid-October Sunday, I parked my car, walked for 15 minutes or so down the railway tracks, and there it was. It was nearing 4:00 pm when I started shooting.

Lighting

As I noted before it was a dull, colorless day - except for the mural, of course. I took a number of shots with and without a flash. Back home I decided I preferred the shots without any artificial lighting. The day might have been dull but it was the colorful message which I wanted to stand out. And in my mind's eye, I thought this could be done with some enhancement.

Equipment

This image was shot with a hand-held Canon EOS 1300D camera.

Inspiration

I was always struck by the bold, beautiful colors of this mural. And its' double entendre message. Yes, it was a "pro-pot" mural, but it was also encouraging us - friends, family, neighbors, community - to inspire and be inspired by others. I thought this was an especially fitting message in the midst of the worst epidemic the world had experienced in a century. And, that during this epidemic, more people than ever were indeed turning to "growing" their own plants and vegetable produce i.e.) gardening, as a way of coping. Further to this, the railways tracks, to me, seemed to be like two silver lines, underlining and emphasizing the message.

Editing

I wanted the message to stand out. So I enhanced the color and the clarity of the image.

In my camera bag

In my bag, you will always find my Canon EOS 1300D camera, a wide angle and telephoto lens and some filters.

Feedback

As an amateur photographer I am reluctant to offer advice to photographers much more skilled and experienced than me. I know photography is about developing and enhancing my skill set and capturing a moment in time. But, for me, it is sometimes about conveying humor. (I have a small collection of photos about just that). And sometimes, it is also about conveying a message. And in these troubling times of CO-VID we all need to hear - and see - those upbeat messages. I encourage all my fellow photographers to look for them and share them with their viewers.
