Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in July 2018 in Farne Islands (England). My goal was to take pictures of puffins with fish in their beak and I wanted both eyes to be in focus; it wasn't easy at all because puffins were extremely fast in order to avois being attacked by seagulls.

Time

I spent all day taking pictures of puffins, guillemots, razorbills and terns, but this photo was taken in the morning.

Lighting

The sun was pretty high in the sky but there were a few clouds that helped me to get a soft and widespread light.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Canon 1DXII, with a Canon 500 f/4 IS II.

Inspiration

I got inspired by the great number of photos that very good photographers around the world take of puffins.

Editing

In this case processing was essential; I just cropped a little bit and opened the shades to make the eyes look better.

In my camera bag

On my photographic tours I always use two cameras, Canon 1DXII and Canon 7DII, with a super-telephoto prime lense and a zoom.

Feedback

First af all, find a place where a lot of puffins fly; then set the camera with fast shutter speeds and a fairly close aperture (I reccomend f/8). Usually I focus the eyes but in this case I focused the beak in such a way that the depth of field went up to the eyes and the fish. Finally, you have to be really patient and wait for the right time!
